What the Department of Defense Did

In 2019, after a single complaint from an activist group, the Department of Defense ordered Shields of Strength to stop using Service Logos on Scripture-inscribed dog tag necklaces—despite the fact that the DOD had previously issued official trademark licenses authorizing Shields of Strength to use those logos.

How Shields of Strength Was Harmed

Before the DOD revoked Shields of Strength’s trademark license, the company had produced more than 4 million Scripture-inscribed dog tag necklaces for members of the Armed Forces—over 2 million of which were donated to military organizations. The DOD’s unlawful action caused significant damage to our business and reputation. More importantly, it harmed the very service members we have always sought to support. They were denied one of the most meaningful spiritual and motivational tools available to them—an item that has strengthened morale and resilience for more than two decades.

What the Court’s Ruling Establishes

Shields of Strength sued the Department of Defense for violating our First Amendment rights. In 2025, a settlement was reached agreeing to change the anti religious DOD policy and allow Shields of Strength to continue making dog tags with scriptures and military insignia.

SOS Has Resumed Full Production

Shields of Strength has now resumed manufacturing dog tag necklaces with Service Logos. Military units may once again request custom designs—combining their unit patch or insignia with the Bible verse of their choice.
