How to Deal with Your Past Your past isn’t the problem. The problem is we refuse to move on so we end up walking through life backwards. What happened to us may have been good or it may have been bad. But if we stay stuck on that, we walk through life backwards. Then our past becomes our problem. That is always rooted in selfishness. In other words, I hurt someone and I am not selfless enough to repent. So my past stays in my future and I keep walking through life backwards. Maybe someone hurt me. I have to be selfless enough to forgive them. That’s the only way to get over that. Or maybe we lost something that meant a lot to us or we lost someone we loved. We have to be selfless enough to go on in their honor. That doesn’t mean we forget them and never think about them again, or that we stop crying. We just cry as we go because our life is not about us. It’s way bigger and more important than that. God still has a purpose for your life. Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord… Matthew 6:14-15 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Philippians 3:13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. Trust God’s Word no matter what. Keep your eyes on the horizon.
