Put me in Coach!

                                                              Put Me In Coach

You know that you have entered a baseball park when you smell that fresh cut grass while holding a bag of peanuts for the ballgame! Baseball has been a tradition in our nation for many years. The chess match duel between the pitcher and batter is an exciting one for those who love the sport. Two teams paired off in the sun trying to get that winning run across the plate. While many focus solely on winning, some athletes see the bigger picture!

sports do not build character they reveal it

Several of the staff members at Shields of Strength provide leadership training to high school athletes through Chaplaincy. We meet with the kids throughout the year giving speeches, providing hands on activities as well as attending their sporting events. Some of the topics that we discuss with them often are:

*Distractions - You can be so distracted by winning that you miss your goal of actually executing at your highest ability. An undistracted athlete prepares, masters the fundamentals, give it all they have during the event and trusts in God in all that they do. A distracted player is one who is willing to take an un-calculated risk at the expense of his teammates. This is the player who seeks glory for himself.

*Being a True Team Player- A team player can single-handedly change the dynamic of a team. One's attitude can uplift everyone around them and also poison the moral depending on the person. A selfless teammate will focus on what's best for the team instead of individual achievements or statistics.

* Love  - When most people hear the word Love, they immediately think of the romantic connotation. Love actually comes in its purest form. Our CEO, Kenny Vaughan often speaks of Love in his speeches. The opposite of Love is fear. When you act with a loving heart, your intentions will always be for the best. Athletes who truly love their teammates will always be selfless and giving. These are the teammates who will go the extra mile and give everything they have during the game without regard for themselves.

We pray that you will always lean on Christ and turn all of your fears and concerns over to Him as you compete.

1 Corinthians 9:25-27

Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

Isaiah 40:31 But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
