Are Members of the Armed Forces authorized to wear Christian Jewelry?

Historically, Soldiers have worn religious medalians to remind themselves that they are not alone, God is with them. The Bible says, Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV)

Since 9/11, millions of American Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines have worn Shields of Strength Scripture engraved Dog Tag Necklaces, on the same chain as their Government Issued Identification Tags, commonly referred to as “ID Tags or Dog Tags.” God’s Word comforts, strengthens, and encourages these Warriors as they train and fight.

Army Regulation (AR) 670-1. Para 1-7, para b, authorizes Soldiers to wear religious jewelry. Marine, Air Force, and Navy regulations also authorize the wear of religious jewelry.

I wore a Shields of Strength Dog tag necklace inscribed with Joshua 1:9 during the last 10 years of my Army career, and I wear it today. That verse strengthened and encouraged me during tough times, good times, and it strengthens me daily. During deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, knowing that God was with me, calmed my mind, enabling me to focus on the mission. I took comfort knowing God repeatedly told Joshua to be strong and courageous, and to not be afraid or discouraged. That told me that Joshua was afraid, yet he boldly went into battle knowing God was with him. God is telling you and me to do the same thing as we face adversity in our lives. God’s promises are timeless. He is with us wherever we go.

Shields of Strength has the largest collection of Scripture inscribed dog tag, cross, and coins for military family members. The Folded Flag Necklace inscribed with John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friend” was created for Goldstar family members. It is a beautiful necklace honoring the Fallen Soldier and it often leads to opportunities to share the life of their loved one. Talking about their loved one is important to Gold Star Family members, and it keeps the Fallen Soldier alive in the hearts and minds of all who learn about their service and sacrifice.
